Feed deer who bow politely for crackers, explore a temple hall large enough to house a 15-meter bronze Buddha, and discover a hidden primeval forest just minutes from the tourist trail. The deer are considered divine messengers of the gods — treat them with respect and they'll guide your quest.

Kasuga-taisha Shrine
A Shinto shrine surrounded by a primeval forest, famous for its 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns donated over centuries. Twice a year, all lanterns are lit at once.
